Emma’s food irritations: hard hamburger buns

I eat often, a lot and with great pleasure, and then I regularly notice things. Usually they’re positive things, but it also often happens that something irritates me immensely. Whether that’s justified or not, sometimes I just need to vent. This week I’m annoyed by hard hamburger buns.

The hamburger hype continues to steadily gain momentum, meaning a good hamburger is never far away. That’s nice, especially when you have a hangover. At the beginning of the burger era, we had to make do with Burgermeester’s hard buns (sorry), but now the brioche bun is the standard. Yet every now and then, when you’re not paying close enough attention, you come across one after all: a hard hamburger bun. And then your entire day is ruined.
The ultimate bun
The ultimate hamburger bun is sturdy enough to support the burger, sauces and toppings, but soft enough to bite into easily. It’s roughly the same size as the burger itself, so you don’t end up with bites of bread without meat, or vice versa. Eating a burger, no matter how delicious, is always a bit of a hassle. You have to eat quickly, otherwise your bun gets soggy, and it’s a messy affair. A bun with a hard exterior is not something you need on top of all that.
Intense torment
It doesn’t eat well and it hurts the roof of your mouth. They’re fine for other purposes, mainly sandwiches with less filling. But a hard bun turns a bite of a juicy, thick burger from a great pleasure into intense torment. On top of that, all the filling falls out much faster, because you have to put in more effort to take a bite, pushing all the contents out in the process. Unlike a soft brioche bun, which practically hugs the filling and delivers it into your mouth perfectly.
An upgrade?
What I especially don’t understand is that people see it as an upgrade. As if an Italian roll is classier than a soggy version, meaning you should really be rubbing your hands with glee that every effort has been made. Well, absolutely not. A hamburger should never make its way into any of the following types of bread: a kaiser roll (which is far too small for a good burger anyway), baguette or ciabatta (both have a completely wrong shape), or a tiger roll. Thank you.
