Asparagus season is open! Naturally, it’s even better when you have a matching wine with your asparagus dinner. With these tips from Michael Daals, sommelier and owner of DareWines, you’ll have the perfect pairing for your asparagus.

“Which wine tastes best with your asparagus depends on how the asparagus is prepared and what you serve with it,” Daals explains. “Are you combining the asparagus with ham or salmon? Or a poached egg? All of these go with different wines.”

Still, Daals does have a little trick. “By choosing a wine that pairs well with many different dishes, such as a rich Chenin Blanc or Riesling such as Bernard Eifel. These wines have the ability to adapt to different preparations.”

The Brabant Asparagus Society also believes that asparagus should be accompanied by a glass of wine, and every year it selects a wine as The Brabant Asparagus Wine. This year, the winner is Corte Fontana Bianco Di Custoza Veneto 2018.

Daals certainly understands the choice: “The wine is mature, full-bodied and has lovely acidity. It fits well within the flavor profile of a wine that pairs with asparagus.” In second place is a Col Reale Bianco IGT del Veneto 2018. Both wines were submitted by Mulders Wijnverkopers.
