Hangovers are often caused by simply drinking too much. Obviously. But there’s more to it. Your hangover can get a lot worse when you drink certain types of alcohol. Now, naturally, you want to know exactly which ones.

Sugars
Is a drink high in sugar? Leave it on the shelf and choose something less sweet. Added sugars are used to shorten the brewing time of drinks. And molasses (a syrupy by-product of refining sugar cane) are added to drinks to enhance the flavor. Unfortunately, sugars also make your hangover worse straight away.

Filtering

The second thing to pay attention to: are you drinking filtered or unfiltered alcohol? During the brewing process, congeners develop and remain in the drink. Methanol, for example. One advantage of these substances is that they create aroma and flavor, but these same substances also cause a nasty hangover. Whisky, for example, contains a lot of congeners, but that’s also what makes whisky taste much more exciting than vodka.

Unfortunately, filtering is expensive for the brewer. That’s why the filtration process is often skipped for cheaper drinks.

The golden tip

So, do you want to drink without regretting it the next day? Spend a little more and go for quality drinks, such as champagne. Eat beforehand, drink a glass of water in between drinks and choose lighter types of alcohol without added sugars.
