Vibrant breweries in 020

Beer brings joy, as one of our life mottos goes. Did you know that there are also plenty of breweries to be found in our capital city? With beers from the following Amsterdam breweries, you’re guaranteed to hit the mark.

Gebrouwen door vrouwen
Two sisters from Amsterdam with one goal: making delicious beer and having lots of fun while brewing and drinking it. Gebrouwen door Vrouwen started as a hobby for two sisters. In 2013, they began home brewing, and by now their hobby has grown into a real profession, and they even have their own bar. The sisters draw their inspiration from Amsterdam’s hospitality industry. Their ‘Gin Weizen’, for example, was inspired by Mossel en Gin in Westerpark.

Oedipus Brewing
Oedipus is a lively Amsterdam brewery known for its delicious beer with unusual names. Funny story: after a weekend of partying at Lowlands, four friends still felt like having a beer. They started home brewing. The beer they produced was such a hit that they decided to scale up. They began a collaboration with Brouwerij de Molen, which resulted in their first beer: Mannenliefde. In no time, Mannenliefde became a real success. Since then, the brewers have created many more beers. Have you tried them all yet?

Brouwerij ‘t IJ
Brouwerij ‘t IJ is the largest brewery in Amsterdam and dates back to 1985. Our favorite from ‘t IJ remains IJWIT, a robust wheat beer. The tasting room at ‘t IJ comes with a huge terrace. Come early, because on sunny days it fills up very quickly. The grilled sausage here is out of this world. The beers on tap change regularly, and you can even take a brewery tour. In the mood for a greener setting? The brewery has also had a tasting room in the Blauwe Theehuis in Vondelpark for a while now.

De Prael
At De Prael brewery, two things take center stage: people and beer. There are now two locations: De Prael Houthavens and De Prael on the Wallen. What do we find so special about this brewery? De Prael provides employment opportunities for people who are distanced from the labor market. This includes people with disabilities or a psychiatric background. Quite apart from this social role, De Prael’s beer is definitely worth trying.

Brouwerij Troost
Brouwerij Troost produces beer, spirits and lemonade at several locations in Amsterdam. The first brewery is located in a former monastery in De Pijp. Here, Troost brews and experiments with its own signature beers. The larger brewery is located in the Westergasfabriek, where lemonades are also made. In addition to beer, Troost distills gin, jenever and bourbon here.
