Flemish student dies after drinking fish sauce

We thought that a little fish sauce had never hurt anyone. Last week, a student from a Flemish student association died after drinking an enormous amount of fish sauce.

A few years ago, a Dutch student died during an initiation ceremony after consuming too much water; this time, the Asian sauce proved fatal to a student. A 20-year-old boy from Edegem had to complete challenges together with two other members of the Reuzegom student club.

Too much salt

The students were left for hours in a pit in a forest and, among other things, had to drink an enormous amount of fish sauce. All three became unwell, but one of them lost consciousness. He died a few days later in hospital. The cause of death was probably an excessively high salt level combined with hypothermia. Reuzegom has since been disbanded.
