Since the end of 2015, Southern Africa has been suffering from extreme drought. Around eighteen million people are facing food shortages, and the UN has declared a state of emergency in seven countries. In Malawi, 6.5 million people have been affected.

A nutritious meal

When you buy one Good Food Book #3, forty children receive a nutritious meal at school. Why at school? “School meals are the way to break the cycle of poverty and hunger: children are sent to school instead of helping at home on the land. They receive an education and a nutritious meal,” says initiator Mariëlle van Spronsen.

Louisiana-style hot dogs

The book is divided into various chapters, such as Party Food and BBQ Bonanza. Our eye was immediately drawn to the recipe for braised pork cheeks by FavorFlav’s Marcus Polman and the Louisiana-style hot dogs by barbecue hero Jord Althuizen. But star chef Soenil Bahadoer’s bara also makes us hungry, as do Albert Kooy’s riftkoekjes. Okay, actually every recipe makes me hungry.

So buy it, because you wouldn’t wish hunger on anyone. And the fact that you end up with a beautiful book containing fifty top recipes is a wonderful bonus.
