Vegetable bar made from waste?!

Slow juicery Frecious from Weesp has recently started making not only vegetable juices but also vegetable bars. From waste. Yes, really. Waste.

Waste from their vegetable juices, that is: the leftover pulp. The juice makers tried to sell the vegetable leftovers to the goats in Amsterdamse Bos, but they turned up their pretty little noses at them.

Mega-responsible

Syrian chef Odai Abood, who started working at Frecious through a programme for recognised refugees, did not. He experimented a little and voilà: now, alongside the juices, there are also two types of vegetable bars on offer in the online shops: a purple one and an orange one. Obviously mega-responsible, in compostable packaging.

The purple one contains beet pulp, fig, date, walnut, hazelnut, maca, cocoa butter, chia seeds, cacao nibs and cinnamon. The orange variety consists of compressed carrot pulp, apricot, almond, raisin, banana, cashews, sunflower seeds, desiccated coconut, coconut oil, chia seeds and sesame seeds.

YES or UGH?

Just like the juices, the bars can be ordered online. They are delivered frozen to your home, where you store them in the freezer. If we are to believe the makers, they taste best straight from the freezer too: ‘then they melt on the tongue’. Do you think they sound good? Or, like the Amsterdam goats, do you turn up your nose at them?
