Where to Get the Craziest Ice Cream Flavors
We have no problem spending an entire summer eating our way through it, especially when it’s hot and we’re eating ice cream. Licking an extra-large scoop of pistachio and/or stracciatella is, after all, the best way to explore a city. There are just so many more flavors to try. Discover these cities through their most exciting ice cream flavors.
Amsterdam
La La IJs is located near the Foodhallen and was founded by two concerned parents who wondered why there was no ice cream shop nearby for their children. Maja and Chris sell sorbets, milkshakes and ice cream, both vegan and non-vegan. You can choose from 30 flavors, but the most unusual are combinations such as buttermilk, turmeric and lavender, watermelon with rose, or cardamom and orange. The selection changes often because they use fresh products, so be sure to check what deliciousness they’re scooping today. FavorFlav’s Emma tried the beurre noisette (browned butter, without nuts but with a hazelnut-like flavor) with apple syrup and thought it was very tasty.
We had already tasted ice cream from Van Leeuwen at one of their six locations in New York. But Van Leeuwen also has its own ice cream shop on Haarlemmerplein. The flavors range from cherry to exciting options such as turmeric and blueberry pie. Not only genuinely delicious, but all very Instaworthy too.

Gouda
In Gouda you’ll find David’s Gelato , and it has pretty much everything you need. The milk in the ice cream was still inside a cow twelve hours earlier, so it’s super fresh. There are savory flavors such as Gouda cheese (with sambal, cloves, or apple syrup and walnut); garlic and sage; whiskey and bacon; avocado; pumpkin and saffron; and arugula, as well as sweet flavors such as asparagus with white chocolate, Fristi and spekkoek. Want beer in your ice cream? Brand IPA is perfect for you. David is a fully trained ice cream master (the highest rank within the ice cream-making profession), gained his experience in Bologna and uses only hand-peeled fresh fruit and regional produce. Utrecht
Are you in Utrecht and in the mood for a daring cone? Get your ice cream at Roberto Gelato. They make the standard flavors, but also ‘ice cream that no one has ever tasted before’ every day. The latter varies quite a bit, so you never know what to expect. Previous flavors have included herring, beer, weed and organic cow’s blood. Maybe we’ll stick with that stracciatella after all.
Eindhoven
Head to the south of the country. In Eindhoven you’ll find the ice cream shop Intelligentia ICE . The name refers to the way you’re supposed to eat the ice cream. It’s more ‘about experiencing than consuming’. What’s more, they’re located in Strijp S, the area where creativity and innovation take place in Eindhoven. Okay, and now for the ice cream flavors. Every month they choose a theme on which they base their ice cream. Think of a Netflix and chill-flavor with popcorn and m&m’s, or a Netflix cuddle up with Doritos and salsa. Or will you go for a House of Cards flavor with whiskey?

Breda and Den Bosch
Frezzo has several locations where you can indulge in flavors such as liquirizia (licorice), Hugo (you know, that summer cocktail) and Smurf ice cream. The recipe for Frezzo’s ice cream is secret, but the founders claim that eating it makes you feel like you’re in Italy. There are more than thirty flavors to choose from, so off to Italy we go!
