10 Incredibly Delicious Vegan and Vegetarian Restaurants

dumbo Rotterdam

Today is World Vegetarian Day, so we’re listing ten wonderful vegetarian and vegan restaurants for you. Don’t worry that you’ll be served a quiche or a simple chili sin carne here. What will you get? Crispy oyster mushroom bao and smoked faux-salmon tartare, for example.

Groenten van Roos (Sittard)

At the age of 24, Roos started a plant-based restaurant out of her passion: Groenten van Roos. Here she serves dishes that are organic, local, gluten-free, lactose-free, vegan and free from refined sugars. From breakfast to lunch and dinner, from fresh juices and smoothies to a large salad buffet. The cherry on top is the rhubarb and strawberry pastries.

BlaBla (Rotterdam)

At BlaBla, it’s neither meat nor fish, literally. Vegetarian indulgence in which the chef doesn’t use meat substitutes, but shows that by cooking creatively, you won’t miss meat or fish. All dishes are inspired by flavors from around the world. The menu changes regularly. And, importantly, there’s a wide choice of desserts.

Bistro ‘t Bloemendaeltje (Amersfoort)

At the new-style Bistro ‘t Bloemendaeltje, vegetables aren’t served on the side; instead, they form the basis of the dishes. Dutch asparagus, baby potatoes, carrots, onions, cabbages and tubers: chef Bas Janssen knows exactly what to do with them.

Dumbo (Rotterdam)

“Rebellious, original, cheerful, modern and artistic,” is how Dumbo describes Dumbo. What does that mean in practice? Tartare made from meat (tomato), celeriac with salty vegetables or crispy oyster mushroom bao.

Black & White KAFE (Breda)

Chef Jurgen spent years gaining experience in the vegetable kitchens of various Michelin-starred restaurants and now creates the most delicious vegan salads and vegetable dishes in Breda. From vegan afternoon tea to sushi bowls and smoky vegan burgers served on a black bun. Even the most seasoned carnivore will be surprised here.

Meatless District (Amsterdam)

The Meatpacking District, New York’s former slaughterhouse district, is a major source of inspiration for Meatless District. But you’ll only see that reflected in the interior (hello, meat hooks), not on the menu, because at Meatless District you can eat only plant-based food. The most notable item on the menu? The smoked faux-salmon tartare.

Flower Burger (Rotterdam)

The popular vegan burger chain from Milan opened a location in Rotterdam last year. You won’t know where to look first. Be surprised by blue, pink and even black 100% vegan burgers. Like the Cherry Bomb Burger, colored pink with cherry extract. Or the Spicy Chickpea Burger, yellow thanks to the addition of turmeric.

Hearth (Amsterdam)

The two Italians, Valetino and Marco, met at the Amstel Hotel, where they worked as chef and manager respectively. This meeting led to Hearth, a place where you can enjoy fantastic vegan and vegetarian food, and also find art and streetwear. Vegan sushi, parsnip gnocchi with courgette pesto and cashew-dragon cheese, or a delicious soup while enjoying the art.

Gare du Nord (Rotterdam)

Gare du Nord is a sustainable, organic and vegan restaurant located in an old train carriage from 1980. It is also called—how could it be otherwise—the train restaurant. The dishes are prepared with local and seasonal ingredients. In front of the train carriage is a large vegetable garden, which is maintained together with local residents.

UIT INDIA (Alkmaar)

A combination of East and West—that’s what you’ll find at UIT INDIA. Chefs in Indian chef’s jackets, waitresses in Indian clothing and a menu consisting entirely of dishes without meat or fish. Tandoori aloo grilled in a tandoor (clay) oven, Pahadi kebab… The best Indian restaurant within the vegan spectrum.
