In the Netherlands, we love our snacks, and we’re certainly not averse to a good portion of fries with something special on top. From classics to the most bizarre inventions; the snack world is rich in surprising names. So for your next snack bar adventure, we’ve put together a list of 10 snack names you really can’t miss. A must-read for the true snack lover!

1. Sidewalk whore platter
What do you get with the sidewalk whore platter? A large tray of fries speciaal, with all kinds of mini snacks literally dumped on top. From frikandellen to bitterballen, everything comes together in this (not exactly refined) snack feast. Tip: Perfect for anyone who can’t choose.
2. Discodel
Wow, this is a real party on your plate! The discodel is a frikandel filled with mayo and sprinkled with sprinkles. You know, those crazy sprinkles you normally only see on soft serve. A riot of color that puts every snack bar visitor in a festive mood.
3. Sponge-scouring sandwich
Doesn’t sound very tasty, does it, but still: a sandwich with a ham-and-cheese soufflé—you immediately want to sink your teeth into that, right? Not exciting enough for you yet? Then order a Spee sandwich: a soft, white bread roll topped with a cheese soufflé, satay sauce, chili sauce and onions. Invented in Nijmegen by a psychology student named Pieter Spee.
4. Frans Bauer fries
Fries with babi pangang? It may sound strange, but it works. This is the ultimate snack for the adventurous eater with a big heart for loaded fries. Say Frans Bauer, and you say conviviality—and that’s exactly what you get with these surprising fries.
5. Difficult fries
The name really says it all. If you order difficult fries, you get a cone of fries with the sauce at the bottom of the cone. It takes quite a guy to get them out easily. ‘Extra difficult fries’? That’s fries with sour meat, curry, mayo and onions.
6. Tractor tire with excrement
Is your mouth still not watering? Just call it a Mexicano with peanut sauce. Prefer it in a sandwich? Then order a ‘Shoe-sole sandwich’: a Mexicano without peanut sauce in a sandwich.
7. Mess fries
Don’t be misled by the name. What you get here is a cone of fries with all kinds of sauces on top. It’s a true flavor explosion, and honestly: who doesn’t love a mess? Extra delicious if you can’t choose between the different sauces. Placing an order under the name ‘Junk fries’ works too.
8. Bouncing rusk with eyelid fat
This name is absolutely confusing if you have no idea what to expect. But luckily, we’re here to help: it’s simply a meatball with mayo. Yes, really. And no, you have no idea how delicious it is until you try it yourself.
9. Nuclear-war fries
Are you a fan of fries oorlog, but want just a little more power? Then nuclear-war fries are exactly what you’re looking for. Fries with mayo, curry, satay sauce and onion. It’s the upgrade you sometimes need in life. Also known as ‘Revolution fries’. In The Hague, they’re known as ‘Hospital fries’.
10. Beaten-rat sandwich
You may really need to be blind drunk for this one, because calling a steak tartare sandwich that is enough to put me off it completely. No, I’ll have a ‘Hat-on-the-ball sandwich’ instead: a meatball sandwich with mayo—delicious!
Cultural heritage
