3 special vegetarian restaurants in the Netherlands

gare du nord

As a vegetarian, it remains a challenge to choose a restaurant where just as much attention is paid to vegetarian food as to food with meat. These restaurants take it one step further. At these special places, they know how to cook vegetarian food like no other, and you also get a fantastic view.

Het Paradijs

At this restaurant in Enschede, you dine surrounded by a jungle designed by nature artist Adriaan Schalken. Expect artistic constructions, stained-glass windows and a colorful mosaic floor when you walk in. Together with little waterfalls, sculptures and lots of plants, this creates a heavenly atmosphere. All the food here is vegetarian. Have lunch or dinner, for example, with a ‘Paradisiacal indulgence’ or the ‘Delicious surprise’, or join them for a high tea with homemade brownies and orange cake.

Pllek

At this Amsterdam vegetarian hotspot, a large shipping container has been converted into a restaurant. The restaurant is located on the IJ, giving you a beautiful view over the water while you tuck into your vegetarian meal. The menu at this special place consists of 75 percent vegetarian food, 25 percent of which is also vegan. In this way, they hope guests will choose a vegetarian dish sooner, so be sure to let yourself be surprised by the curry with beetroot and coconut or the Korean falafel made from mung beans and kimchi. Incidentally, it is not just a restaurant: at the weekend, you can take a yoga class or workshop, listen to live music or admire an art exhibition.

Gare Du Nord

Forget that soggy sandwich on the train; here you can enjoy a full culinary meal! At Gare Du Nord restaurant in Rotterdam, you have lunch or dinner in an old Deutsche Reichsbahn train carriage. With its dusty pink folding seats and original tables, you can imagine yourself back in the 1980s. The restaurant’s menu consists exclusively of organic and vegan dishes. The train stands still in the middle of a large vegetable garden tended by local residents. The herbs and vegetables from that garden end up on your plate. A new menu is put together every week: a small menu for lunch and an extensive menu with a three-course dinner during the evening.
