3D Egg Waffle Ice Cream

It’s the summer of freak ice creams. With clouds of cotton candy spun around the 3D cone. And churros, cream puffs, mini donuts, chocolate bars, Pocky sticks, popcorn and sprinkles on top.

Many of these ice cream trends come from Asia. Such as taiyaki ice cream: the fish-shaped cone from which brightly colored soft serve seems to spray upward like a fountain from its wide-open mouth. An icy version of the traditional Japanese taiyaki waffle with its closed mouth, filled with, for example, red bean paste and baked on a sort of poffertjes griddle.
Hong Kong
The egg puff waffle had also been a hit in Asia for years. According to some, this airy waffle with thick bubbles originated in Hong Kong; according to others, in Taiwan. Wherever it comes from, it has now found a new application.
Fold the 3D waffle while it is still warm. And fill it with the entire candy store.
After baking, it is folded into a cone as quickly as possible, while it is still warm and flexible. Then the fun of filling it can begin. Scoops of ice cream, sauces, Pocky sticks – chocolate sticks in infinitely many flavors – fresh fruit, mini Oreos, candies: anything can go in. With a grand finale of rainbow-colored sprinkles.
I Scream
Recently, you can also eat these photogenic, cake-like on the inside and crispy on the outside, 3D egg waffle ice creams in our country. For example, at I Scream Waffle in Amsterdam’s Foodhallen.
With the video below and a little imagination, you can make them yourself using the poffertjes griddle that has been gathering dust at the back of the kitchen cupboard for years. Okay, the Dutch griddle isn’t double-sided, so you only get bubbles on one side. But still. Freak out!
