4 Spanish fishing villages you absolutely want to visit at least once
Spain remains the ultimate holiday destination, if you ask me. Whether you’re going away for a weekend or taking a sunny holiday; there are so many great destinations here. And oh, the food. I’d head to Spain for that alone. Cities like Barcelona, Valencia and Madrid have become a bit standard by now and — this sounds a little diva-ish, but hey — you’ve seen those eventually too.
If you’re heading towards the Spanish sun for a week or longer, you don’t want to spend the entire week in a big city either, right? And personally, a big city doesn’t always give me that real holiday feeling; I need some peace and quiet for that. Well, peace and quiet, beaches, good food and sunshine: these Spanish villages have all the ingredients for the ultimate holiday!
These are the four villages you want to visit
The villages of Moraira, Javea, Altea and Dénia are close to one another. They’re located between Alicante and Valencia, so you can fly into either of these airports if you’re heading this way. Rent a car and off you go, although I’ve also done it by train/bus and that’s perfectly manageable too (although it takes a little longer).
Dénia is the largest town, but I always prefer to stay in Moraira myself. You can get to any of the villages in no time by car anyway, but I find the beach and restaurants in Moraira the nicest of all. With Javea in a solid second place. For example, at Nautico Morairo, where you have a view of the harbour and a great sunset from the Upperclub (on the first floor).
I visit Javea and Altea for their wonderful beach clubs, such as La Siesta, Bay Club Altea and Olla Beach Bar. If you fancy an evening of fine dining, be sure to head towards Dénia. It’s bursting with incredibly good restaurants. Quique Dacosta has three stars, for example, BonAmb has two and Casa Papa has one too. Not to be confused with restaurant Ca Pepe — no star, but incredibly delicious. You can hear it already: a trip to these villages is also quite a culinary highlight.
When are we leaving?!
You’ll find these villages on the Costa Blanca, and I often combine a holiday here with a weekend in Valencia. That way, you still get the hustle and bustle of the city, followed by relaxation in these fishing villages. Mainly relaxation, yes, because the nightlife here — as you may have expected — isn’t exactly buzzing. You can drink cocktails and there are plenty of terraces, but if you feel like partying, you can head to Dénia or Moli Blanc in Javea. If you still have the energy after your day at the beach, of course…

PS. If you’re tempted to visit nearby Calpe too: DON’T. It’s awful, I speak from experience. Unless fluorescent lights and frozen tapas are your thing… You’ve been warned.
