Are you also impossible to deal with before you’ve had your first cup of coffee of the day? Sometimes that cup tastes even better when someone else makes it. For example, the staff at these best coffee places in Leiden.

Borgman&Borgman

Father and son Borgman had a dream: their son graduated from hotel school and wanted to start his own business. 1+1 = 2 and suddenly there was Borgman&Borgman. When you walk in, the enormous coffee roaster immediately catches your eye (a Giesen W6, for true connoisseurs), where the beans are roasted using the slow-roast method. It smells wonderful inside. A nice detail: the coffee beans come from plantations where farmers receive a fair price for their produce. Grab your newspaper and treat yourself to the best coffee in Leiden.

Chummy Coffee

At Chummy, you can’t have lunch—only coffee. And cake, because cake is allowed with coffee. But the focus is clearly on coffee. The menu features regular coffee, as well as several specials such as the ‘specu’. Is it winter already? Enjoy your cappuccino by the window, with a view of the lively Breestraat, or head up the stairs to the mezzanine. Just as cozy. Chummy means ‘cozy’, by the way, and this place certainly is.

Pieterskerk Café

According to many, the Pieterskerk is one of the most beautiful buildings in Leiden. That alone is reason enough to visit Pieterskerk Café. The coffee is fine, but the location is truly worth it. You’re seated in the church’s old library, after all. You can also enjoy a tasty lunch with sandwiches made from corn or spelt bread.

Van de Leur

Van de Leur is known for its Meatcave restaurant, but we can also tell you that they serve excellent coffee in the separate coffee shop. The coffee beans roasted by Single Estate come from Costa Rica, Guatemala and Brazil, and if you really want to know everything about them, you can even take a barista course at Van de Leur.

You can choose classics such as a cortado or a lungo, but filter coffee made with an AeroPress is also an option. In the mood for something sweet? Go for a Mars coffee, or something stronger, such as an Italian coffee. And while you’re there, try a sourdough toastie with jalapeño, tomato and Leiden cheese, or something more substantial like a flammkuchen with goat’s cheese, olives and tomato.
