6x Incomprehensible Supermarket Products #5

Boodschappen Albert Heijn (1)

There are some products you see on supermarket shelves that make you think: who came up with this? Once again, we’ve picked a few incomprehensible products from the supermarket shelves.

We have a bone to pick with this

Handy for on the go, at work or during lunch. So far: agreed. But why on earth wouldn’t you just peel that apple yourself? Much tastier and much cheaper: you pay a whole euro for a bag containing 1 washed and peeled apple. Bizarre.

Omelet made of hot air

Fancy a delicious farmer’s omelet? In the supermarket, you can buy a ‘base for farmer’s omelet’. In tiny letters: ‘shopping list on the back.’ And what do you know? You still have to buy eggs, onion, mushrooms and bread yourself. It’s a bit of a shame that with those products, you can literally make a farmer’s omelet yourself already; you don’t need a base for that.

Hmm, what does that remind us of? The ‘Poké Bowl with lots of delicious vegetables’ from Knorr. Knorr boasts a beautiful picture of a healthy Poké Bowl ‘with lots of delicious vegetables’ on the packaging, but the only vegetable actually included in the package is 5% red bell pepper in the topping mix. So, just like Honig, Knorr mainly offers hot air.

Time saved! Really?

Here’s another one: quick-cooking rice. You’d think this rice would take much less time to cook than regular rice, but you end up being disappointed. The cooking time is only 2 minutes shorter—I repeat, 2 MINUTES. Fortunately, quick-cooking rice is cheaper than regular rice, but as far as I’m concerned, the word ‘quick-cooking’ can be removed from the packaging.

Extra-long-lasting delicious rolls

Thought it couldn’t get any stranger? Oh yes, it can. Albert Heijn sells extra-long-lasting delicious rolls. These rolls come in different varieties, including currant rolls, white rolls and whole-wheat rolls. The choice is endless and according to Appie, these tasty soft white rolls stay delicious for extra long. We’re wondering: what exactly has been added here? We’d rather not know…

Ready-made bacon pancakes

Need an easy meal today? Jumbo sells ready-made bacon pancakes. Simply heat them up in the microwave or in a pan. But seriously now: couldn’t you just make these yourself?! And everyone knows that homemade pancakes are already much tastier than pancakes from a packet; bacon pancakes are even better when you make them yourself (tip: try adding banana to the batter, and if you’re really in a playful mood, a splash of rum).

Nacho kit, I kid you not

Who doesn’t love loaded nachos with a delicious dip? Nobody, that’s what I thought. But why would you buy a kit when you’ll be much better off with a large bag of nachos, some salsa sauce and sour cream—both tastier and cheaper? Zero effort, major effect.
