A lifetime of free M&M’s, never having to pay for your French fries from a fast-food restaurant or cat food ever again: that sounds like the ultimate dream that everyone hopes will come true at some point. Because you’ll surely get through a lifetime supply of your favorite snack or drink. Still, winning such a gigantic prize isn’t always as blissful as it sounds. These people share their stories.
A lifetime supply: this is what it was really like
French fries
“My brother once won a Burger King competition, which meant he could get free French fries for the rest of his life. What does ‘free for life’ mean? A maximum of two portions every week, for 25 years. We still have no idea how the employees kept track of it, because those two portions were practically doubled every week. Unfortunately, the 25 years are now almost over.”
Energy drink
This winner of a year’s worth of free Red Bull received around 200 cans delivered to his home for free. All the cans were gone after one party weekend. Another energy drink winner was less lucky. To this day, he hasn’t seen a single can of his lifetime supply of Monster Energy.
Mars bars
“My parents once won a year’s worth of free Mars bars. I don’t remember exactly how many there were. I do know that after eating Mars bars for a month as a six-year-old, I still can’t stand the sight of them, let alone eat them. Even the smell alone has become unbearable.”
Taco Bell
“I once had a roommate who won a year of free meals at Taco Bell. He was allowed to spend around 10 dollars every day. We were still students at the time, so he definitely made the most of it. He ate at Taco Bell every day for years. By now, he could probably recite the entire menu in his sleep.”
Cheetos
“About 20 years ago, I once clicked on an advertisement where you could win free Cheetos chips during computer class at secondary school. Ever since then, I’ve received 31 small bags of Cheetos delivered to my home in a box every month. I was also suspended for two weeks for clicking on the ad, by the way—more than worth it.”
M&M’s
“It was quite a while ago, but do you remember the white M&M’s hidden in the bags? Whoever found one won free M&M’s for the rest of their life. My mother was one of the lucky ones and found one (which she had almost eaten, by the way), and then had dozens of bags delivered to her home. They were gone after a month, mainly because she handed them out to everyone she met.”
Cat food
“My father once won a lifetime supply of food for his cat. Dad was happy, the cats less so. They didn’t find the food edible at all and refused to eat it. We donated all the cans to the local animal shelter.”
