9 things that are bloody irritating at dinner parties with friends, #2

horeca irritant

Last week, we wrote about the things that really annoy us at dinner parties with friends. Like when that expensive wine you bring isn’t poured but ends up in their wine collection, for example. And guess what? It turns out you have quite a few pet peeves in this area too, as became clear from the comments under this article. A selection of the funniest, most striking and worst pet peeves:

Can’t you taste anything?

“I’m a vegetarian and am sometimes asked whether I do eat chicken, then. Or I’m asked whether I’m still a vegetarian: ‘Because we cooked something delicious for you, there’s a little bit of meat in it, but it’s chopped so finely that you can’t taste it.’”

Do they like it or not?

“People with children came over for dinner. They had said in advance what the children did and didn’t like. I had taken that into account. Then they arrived much later than planned, and the children were tired because they had gone to the playground with friends and had eaten there too. It hadn’t been planned. I was incredibly annoyed. I was left with all the food I had made especially for their offspring.”

Deliciously gluten-free

“When you have to eat gluten-free and mention it in advance, and there’s a gigantic mountain of food ready for the ‘ordinary’ people while you get a shot glass with a few tiny shrimp, and they still try to make a triumphant show of it too, like: ‘Look, a gluten-free meal!’

I don’t like pea soup!

“What I always find annoying is that, when I host a party at my house, I always go all out and make sure there’s something everyone really likes, or take specific tastes or allergies into account, and then when there’s a party at their house, you’re completely forgotten. Like that one time at a birthday party with my in-laws: there was pea soup with brown rolls, even though I’m allergic to wheat fibre and really hate pea soup. In-laws you’ve been part of for over 20 years should know better by now.”

Dishes in the bin

“I hate it when people want to ‘help’. Once, I had someone over who wanted to help with the washing-up. They dumped everything in there as if they were throwing something into a bin…”

We brought something delicious

“When you invite people over for coffee and buy something delicious especially for them, and then they show up with an apple pie from Albert Heijn themselves…”

Into the freezer

“I once spent three days in the kitchen making a meal for 17 people. Four showed up. It was one family, so I had invited everyone when I sent out the invitations. I wasn’t very happy about it. Luckily, I have a large chest freezer.”

Still, despite all our pet peeves, big or small, laughable or otherwise, the general tendency remains, neatly summed up by one of you: “Just sit down, eat and have a good time. It’s not that difficult, is it? See you soon!”
