Açaí bowls: the last to come around

Do you see the açaí bowl as yet another over-the-top fit girl craze that you absolutely don’t want to take part in? I felt exactly the same way, until I tried one recently. It pains me to say it, but the fit girls are right. Açaí bowls are fucking delicious.

I don’t like crazes, and health crazes least of all. When I suddenly started seeing açaí bowls popping up everywhere a few years ago, I ran very fast in the opposite direction. Puréed fruit in a bowl and then charging €12 for it too—is this a joke? Everyone who takes part in this is completely fucking crazy!
Hungover
But yes, recently I was hungover. I actually felt like having scrambled eggs with bacon or ordering McDonald’s, but since I had already consumed at least 4,000 kcal the night before, that didn’t seem like the best idea. When I was scrolling through my delivery app, I suddenly saw a photo of a colourful bowl. I hate bowls – I even devoted an entire article to them -, but I had to eat something. Reluctantly, I paid the €20.50. Since I was ordering anyway, I of course also had to order a juice called Dragon Slayer, and I always tip the delivery driver a euro. Now all that was left was to wait.
Goji berries
When the doorbell rings after I’ve ordered pizza, McDonald’s or gyros (my usual hangover food), I sprint to the door at top speed. Hungover or not. My walk to the door when my fruit was delivered was a little slower, but as soon as I took my first bite, I started dancing with happiness. This is so delicious! Ice-cold, pleasantly sour, sweet and even creamy (I think because of the puréed banana). And on top of that, crunchy granola, toasted coconut and banana slices. I even ate the goji berries – ugh, more superfood – with great pleasure. What had happened to me?
I was wrong
I was won over. I’ve always had a strong opinion that I shout from the rooftops, but sometimes you simply have to admit you were wrong. Completely wrong. Last weekend I went to the Brazilian supermarket to buy bags of frozen açaí pulp so I can make this divine breakfast at home. Luckily, there’s a whole lot of sugar in a bowl like that, it’s not healthy at all, and I still won’t be called a fit girl. So, really, do you have a prejudice against the açaí bowl? Go and eat one very soon—you won’t regret it.
