American bar snacks

Around cocktail hour, you might mainly think of bitterballen, an old-fashioned drinks platter or Spanish tapas. But next time, reach for an American snack. These bites are typical bar food and taste even better with an ice-cold beer.

Jalapeño poppers
jalapeño peppers filled with cheese, then coated in breadcrumbs and deep-fried. This recipe uses a double layer of breadcrumbs for extra crunch. So addictive.

Mozzarella sticks
Cheese sticks, but different. The coating isn’t made of dough, but breadcrumbs, and they’re often served with a spicy tomato sauce. Here’s how to make them yourself.
Buffalo wings
With bar snacks, you’re sometimes supposed to get your fingers a little dirty, which definitely happens with these buffalo wings. Make the wings as spicy as you like; the refreshing dip made with sour cream and blue cheese provides some relief. You can easily leave out the blue cheese, by the way, if you’re not a fan.

Blooming onion
A whole onion, cut into a flower shape and dipped in a delicious spice mixture. Then, of course, deep-fried—it is America, after all. This recipe is a favorite.
Sliders
Basically nothing more than a small hamburger, really, and that makes it a snack in our book. You won’t hear us say no to a mini burger stuffed with cheese and bacon.
Crab cakes
The perfect party snack, they’re best when made with fresh crabmeat. Add some tartar sauce for dipping and you’ll just keep eating.

Potato skins
Typically American, but something you hardly ever see in the Netherlands: crispy potato skins. So next time, don’t throw away your potato skins when making mashed potatoes; make this recipe with cheese, bacon and a generous dollop of sour cream instead.
