Facade sign must go

The facade sign of ice cream parlor Monte Pelmo – dating from 1965 – must go according to the municipality of Amsterdam. In 2013, it was legally decided that loose letters must henceforth be used instead of complete facade signs. The sign was proudly put up by the owner’s grandparents in 1965 and still looks just as beautiful.

Man steals 3,400 kilos of candy

Police found 3,400 kilos of stolen candy from Mars at an American man’s home. This story began when a truck was rented at a Mars distribution point to transport rejected candy to another location. The truck arrived empty. The thief was caught when police found advertisements on Facebook offering cheap candy. Stealing food and drinks is lucrative; in December, $41,000 worth of chicken wings and four tons of cheese were also stolen.

World’s most expensive sushi and sashimi

The Japanese restaurant chain Sushi Zanmai bought a bluefin tuna for $117,000. During the first fish auction of the year, high amounts are traditionally bid on tuna because people believe in “goshiga soba,” a ‘congratulatory price’ meant to ensure a prosperous year. Bluefin tuna is hardly eaten anymore in many countries because it is an endangered species. Activist groups have repeatedly warned that overfishing and rising tuna prices could lead to the fish becoming extinct. Japan does not seem overly concerned and consumes eighty percent of all bluefin tuna caught worldwide each year.
