At IZAKAYA, enjoy incredible dishes from the robata grill

IZAKAYA has been a household name in the capital for years. IZAKAYA (in full: IZAKAYA Asian Kitchen & Bar) is known for its incredible sushi dishes and exciting cocktails, but what you really want to try there are the barbecue dishes from the robata grill.

While the traditional ‘Izakaya’ is best described as a Japanese pub, IZAKAYA in Amsterdam’s De Pijp district is best described as urban chic and international; the latter also because of its location—the restaurant is housed in the Sir Albert Hotel. But apart from international guests, it is always packed with locals too.

IZAKAYA summer barbecue menu
During the summer months (July & August), IZAKAYA serves a summer barbecue menu on weekends, featuring classics from the IZAKAYA chefs. The special barbecue menu includes five refreshing and light starters, including IZAKAYA’s spinach salad and the new special: tomato and avocado ceviche.
But first: cocktails! IZAKAYA’s signature cocktail is the Lycheeshu: a cocktail with vodka, lychee liqueur and yuzu juice. A killer cocktail, with exactly the right balance between sour and sweet. Delicious! Alongside it: edamame.

Robata grill
Various skewer dishes are prepared on the grill. Japanese barbecue is different from barbecue in other countries. Grilling is often done on what is known as a robata grill: a rectangular stone grill with two fire zones. The five main courses come straight from the robata grill. We went for two different skewers: the Beef Antichucho Skewers and the Teriyaki Chicken Skewers. Both incredibly tender with a crispy exterior—very tasty. The portions are meant to be shared, but believe me, you actually won’t want to…

The Jumbo Prawn & Spicy-Lemon Robata-Yaki and the Lamb Racks Chili-Miso Glaze are also excellent. The Lamb Racks alone are reason enough to make a beeline for IZAKAYA. The lamb is incredibly flavorful, tender and juicy. And that chili-miso glaze—delicious!

Beef Toban-Yaki: yum!
Not from the robata grill but still highly recommended is the Beef Toban-Yaki. Toban-Yaki is a special way of cooking, namely on a ceramic plate. The meat (tenderloin) is served at the table, sizzling wonderfully on a hot ceramic plate that retains heat well and cooks the meat evenly. The result: deliciously tender and juicy meat.
