Back to black

It may be a bit 2016, but black food keeps popping up. And secretly, it is actually quite impressive to see. Take a look?

Pasta
Available ready-made or easy to make yourself by adding squid ink to your pasta (dough) (available from the fishmonger or wholesaler). So dramatic and so beautiful.

Garlic
The mild flavour and creamy texture make black garlic a must-have in the kitchen. By fermenting a regular bulb of garlic, the cloves develop a deep-black colour. Ideal for making garlic sauce.

Ice cream
This ice cream is coloured black with activated charcoal and leaves its mark on your teeth and tongue. The flavour is remarkably neutral, just like regular ice cream. Mainly do it for the photo, then.

Salt
This salt is harvested from lava rocks in lakes in Hawaii. It has a slightly nutty flavour and is mainly just very salty (like sea salt, really). A pinch of black salt takes your dish to the next level. Note: fake, artificially coloured varieties are in circulation that stain your hands heavily.

Buns
Here too, activated charcoal is added to the dough. The result: jet-black bread.
