Imagine this happening to you: getting lost and having absolutely no food with you. Pure panic (I’m really not a survivor at all), so the only solution is to start drinking. Well, especially if that’s your only chance of survival.

That’s what happened to 48-year-old Australian Lillian Ip. She left home by car on Sunday, but took the wrong turn — and got stuck in the mud.

The farewell letter had already been written

She got stuck in a wooded area without reception, so she couldn’t call anyone. The only things she had with her in the car were lollipops and a bottle of wine, which she had bought as a gift for her mother. Lilian isn’t a drinker at all, but there was no other option: that bottle of wine was her only chance of survival.

For five days, she stayed in and around her car, hoping someone would find and rescue her. But, understandably, her courage began to wane; she even wrote a farewell letter in case she was found dead. Because of her health, she cannot walk long distances, so she stayed in and near her car; ultimately, it turned out that she was 60 kilometres from the nearest town.

“On the last day before I was found, my whole body stopped functioning. I was about to give up,” Lilian says about her experience. Terrifying, I’d say. But fortunately, Lilian knows how to set priorities; the first thing she asked for when she was found was a cigarette from the police.
