Breaking: white truffles cheaper than ever this year

Do you love a huge mountain of freshly shaved truffle over your pasta or foie gras? Then we have good news for you. The heavy rainfall in Northern Italy is causing an enormous abundance of the white gold this year, resulting in prices being cut in half. Say what?

According to The Wall Street Journal, a kilo of fresh white truffles currently costs between two thousand and twenty-five hundred euros; last year, that was twice as much. This means that the decadent flavour enhancer is still not exactly easy on the wallet, but for the average truffle devotee, this news is a gift from heaven. And the best part is: as consumers, we get to enjoy this wonder of nature too this year.

Peak season for white truffles

Truffle importer Daan Witteveen of Fred de Leeuw BV – the only Dutch company that has dealt exclusively in truffles for more than forty years – confirms that this year not only the price, but also the quality, is absolutely top-notch:

“2018 is indeed a very good year. Not only for white truffles, but also for autumn and winter truffles. The truffle market is one of supply and demand. When the price of truffles is high, the quality is generally not all that impressive. This year, the price is lower than ever and the quality is also exceptionally good. It really is peak season for white truffles. The price will rise again around Christmas because demand then increases enormously, so anyone who is smart won’t wait too long.”
