Broodje Ben: Utrecht’s tastiest sandwich

No energy left to cook? We get it. But delicious food is a must—never settle for less. That’s why we’ve put together our tips for truly delicious takeaway meals, the best delivery services and affordable places.

Broodje Ben in Utrecht is not only affordable and incredibly delicious, but also iconic to the city. The cart stands on the Bakkerbrug bridge over the Oudegracht, right in the heart of the city centre. At weekends, the queue of hungry people stretches a fair way along the canal, because all you want is to get yourself a sandwich and eat it by the canal.
Plenty of choice
The weekend queue isn’t without reason, because you have to choose from fifty freshly baked sandwiches with delicious fillings. Thanks to the sandwich cart’s years of success, you can also order them through Thuisbezorgd.
In the end, I always walk away with one of these two (or both)
Two classics are highly recommended: carpaccio and vitello tonnato. The carpaccio is made with creamy truffle mayonnaise, fresh green pesto, Parmesan, pine nuts and sun-dried tomatoes, with rocket on top.
The vitello tonnato is topped with tender veal, and the tuna mayonnaise is perfectly balanced (read: not too sparing). Alongside pesto, rocket, pine nuts and sun-dried tomatoes, the sandwich also comes with red onion and olives. Even though I promise myself beforehand that I’ll choose something different for once, in the end I always walk away with one of these two (or both).
You almost wonder how the fifty different types of sandwiches can all come from that one cart, but they are prepared fresh for you when you place your order. For €3 and €6.95, you can get one of the generously filled sandwiches or salads.
