Broodje Mario Utrecht at risk of disappearing: panic in the Dom City

Broodje Mario Utrecht

Alarm in Utrecht! The legendary Broodje Mario is at risk of disappearing. Yes, you read that right: the sandwich that won over hearts and stomachs for almost 50 years on the Oudegracht is up for sale. There is no successor ready within the Nistro family, and the owner is considering returning to Italy. For many people from Utrecht, this feels like the end of an era.

The queue at the stand, the men behind the counter who have been doing everything the same way for years, the smell of freshly baked bread… it is Utrecht in a bun. And the fact that this may disappear: unimaginable and sad.

Broodje Mario: irresistible and affordable

Broodje Mario is a classic, that much is clear. Perfect in all its simplicity and with a surprising kick. Cheese, salami, chorizo, raw vegetables and that distinctive spicy green pepper. All served on a light, white roll that gives way with every bite.

And then there’s the price, people, the price!

No insane Randstad-style prices that make you hyperventilate. Fourteen euros for a sandwich? No, nothing like that. Knock a tenner off: for four euros, you get a delicious piece of Utrecht history. And you can only pay in cash. Cash only, because some traditions never die.

The sandwich everyone knows

Broodje Mario was created by Mario Nistro, a pizza baker from Italy, in 1977. Since his death in 2013, his sons Agostino and Massimo have been at the helm. The sandwich has never changed, never become too expensive, and the secret lies in the perfect balance of flavors.

Why are we all so in love with this sandwich? The combination of salty meat, creamy cheese, crunchy raw vegetables and the sharpness of the green pepper is simply brilliant. The sandwich feels like a warm welcome to the city, a tradition passed down from generation to generation. And all for four euros—we’ll emphasize that once again.

Panic on the Oudegracht

The idea that Broodje Mario could disappear is causing collective hysteria among people from Utrecht and far beyond. The name and concept have been disputed before, even in court. Competition from other Italian sandwich shops? Certainly. But Broodje Mario remains inextricably linked to Utrecht.

Even the mayor—Sharon Dijksma, in 2020—once managed to cause controversy on social media when she described the sandwich as “a load of greasy mush.” Fortunately, she later made amends by getting a sandwich, with pepper.

The end of an icon?

There is no successor ready within the family, so the entire concept is up for sale: the trade name, recipes and even the brand name. Rent for the location on the Oudegracht amounts to 82,043 euros per year, excluding VAT. The concept comes with a price tag, but who will pay it—and, above all, who can preserve Broodje Mario’s iconic character—remains uncertain. In theory, even a chain like Domino’s could move in, but that would of course be a national disgrace.

Buy one or make it yourself?

There are people who try to recreate the sandwich at home, but believe us: without that green pepper, it will never be the same. Want the real deal? Go to Oudegracht 130-132, bring cash, order a Broodje Mario and enjoy almost 50 years of perfection on a bun—while you still can.
