Bûche de Noël

buche de noel

You only see this sweet spectacle appear around the Christmas season. Bûche de Noël is a traditional French Christmas dessert in the shape of a log. A mega impressive ending to the Christmas dinner.

Cake is baked in a thin sheet and rolled up, then filled with cream or mousse and often covered with crème as well. That is quite a task, and it is important to roll up the cake before it has cooled completely, but it must not be too warm either. Otherwise, it will break.

You can vary endlessly with both the cake and the filling. If you are really in the festive spirit, add some rum to the mousse or cream as well. With this recipe from Bon Appetit, you can make it yourself. It may be a slightly more elaborate recipe than you would normally make, but hey, it is Christmas after all.
