Caffè shakerato: the best summer drink to start your morning with

Zomerdrankje

Our colleague Sophie from Italiamo knows which Italian customs we can happily adopt here. Ordering a shakerato in a martini glass early in the morning, for example. No one in Italy finds that strange. Italians simply drink the precursor to the espresso martini in the morning, and you should try it too.

Caffè shakerato

The name sounds fun: like some kind of tropical dance, although I hate dancing, and even the sound of making it is fun. It is the rhythmic rattle of a cocktail shaker, and that is something you can definitely wake me up for. A shakerato is essentially iced coffee shaken (shake-rato) like a cocktail and poured into a martini glass. An espresso martini without alcohol, although people in Italy do secretly cheat a little. With a splash of grappa, for example, or Baileys.

Making Italian iced coffee

Because the iced coffee is made like an espresso martini (or, more accurately, the other way around: the cocktail is a variation on the shakerato), it gets triple bonus points for its velvety texture and creamy foam. So there are only three ingredients: a shot of espresso (60 ml), sugar (about a tablespoon) and ice cubes (around 4 to 6), shaken together in the cocktail shaker and poured through a fine sieve into the glass. Unless you opt for that splash of booze, in which case there are four.
