Thirsty tales

Classic with style: Negroni

Negroni

Just like coffee, whisky and other bold drinks, you may need some time to get used to the taste of Negroni. The bitters and alcohol mean that you should enjoy this cocktail slowly. Only then can you let this drink seduce you: the sweetness of the vermouth and the freshness of the orange make this one of the most stylish drinks ever.

Many stories circulate about the origins of Negroni, but the most plausible one is that this drink was first served in Florence in 1919.  Mr Negroni, a gentleman of status, reportedly asked the bartender to give his favourite drink (the Americano) an extra kick.

The soda water was replaced with gin and, for fun, the barman swapped the lime for orange. Et voilà: the Negroni was born. To this day, it is the best-known Italian cocktail and, as far as we’re concerned, also the most stylish.

The recipe? Easy: pour equal parts (30 ml) Campari, Gin and red, sweet Vermouth into a glass filled with ice cubes and finish with orange zest.
