Delivery review: BORRL KITCHEN’s Dutch bar snacks

During this crazy coronavirus era, restaurants are closed, so we’re happily eating out at home. Luckily, many new and special delivery and takeaway restaurants have been popping up. And we’re going to test them for you. That way, we can keep eating well and support the hospitality industry. Today: BORRL KITCHEN in Amsterdam.

Desperate for drinks and snacks
Time for a little glass, some sausage and cheese. It’s drinks, drinks… time, sings happily in my head. These days, we can’t start drinking early enough. The recycling bin is my best friend. As if the delivery person sensed that my need for drinks and snacks was great, the doorbell rang at exactly 4 p.m. It’s BORRL KITCHEN!
BORRL what?
BORRL KITCHEN. This cosy little restaurant opposite Artis has turned having drinks and snacks into a full-day activity. Snack boards are served all day long. From breakfast to dinner, everything can be shared here. A great place, then, to meet up with friends and enjoy a glass of vermouth, wine or a beer with tasty bites. Now that the restaurant is closed, those of us who are notorious snackers can order the BORRL BOX.

Unboxing
Unpacking the box feels like opening a present. Under the protective paper is a large quantity of tubs and bags. On top are a menu card bearing the golden motto ALTIJD BORRL TIJD and a handwritten card with the advice: grab a large board and some extra tubs. Put on a playlist and… enjoy. While unpacking the tubs, I suddenly find myself in the 1970s. Homemade cheese straws with sunflower and pumpkin seeds, crudités with aioli dip, herb butter, old-school peanuts and cherry tomatoes. The only thing missing is the cup of cigarettes.

Spanish hams
Like a child under the Christmas tree, I arrange all the delicious-looking presents. Wonderful salchichón Ibérico, chorizo and Serrano ham are neatly packed in vacuum bags. The crackers with garlic, rosemary and thyme, the sun-dried tomato tapenade, the pecorino—everything tastes equally delicious. You can see that everything in the box has been packed with an incredible amount of care and love.

Can BORRL KITCHEN come over for drinks and snacks more often?
Absolutely! For this price, you really get a fantastic quantity of drinks-and-snacks bites that turn an evening under house arrest into a real celebration. Great when you have guests over or when you’re having a romantic date at home with your partner or the whole family. The box for two is just 17 euros, while the box for four is 34 euros. Order via borrl.kitchen. The box is delivered to your home (ordered in the morning, delivered in the afternoon!) or can be collected yourself. There’s also good news for Artis residents: BORRL KITCHEN cooks a daily changing menu for them at a friendly price.
