Delivery review: Cannibale Royale’s takeaway meal

Cannibale royale

In this insane coronavirus era, restaurants are closed, so we’re happily eating out at home. Fortunately, many new and special delivery and takeaway restaurants have joined the scene. And we’re going to test them for you. That way, we can keep eating well while supporting the hospitality industry. Today: Cannibale Royale in Amsterdam.

It’s already late. Far too late. A time when you would normally automatically think: Cannibale Royale! The fires here burn well into the night, even until 3:00 a.m. on weekends. In just a few years, this restaurant has grown into a mini-chain with five locations in Amsterdam. In these dark, cozy and always dynamic restaurants, you eat a deliciously tender steak or a generously filled burger among a colorful crowd of students, crazy groups, night owls and well-informed tourists.

What are we ordering?

Time for a good piece of meat. Unfortunately, there are no steaks on the delivery menu, because it is almost impossible to deliver them appetizingly without compromising the temperature and tenderness of the meat. A burger it is, then. We’re going for the Le Cannibale Royale Burger Combo and a Le Classique. Unfortunately, the Red Light District (the nearest location) isn’t open, so we have to order from elsewhere and the food is on the road a little longer.

The delivery

The courier rings the doorbell. ‘Wait a moment: I still need to take a photo,’ he says, as he gets down on his knees. That’s my line! ‘May I take a photo of you?’ I ask in turn. ‘Could you crouch down one more time?’ He looks at me and searches for the right words, but kneels down to photograph the delivery note on the bag again.

The packaging

The burgers are neatly wrapped in Cannibale Royale paper, while the fries are in a grease-soaked bag. There are four tubs of mayonnaise in the bag. Enough to cause acute cardiac arrest. I hadn’t noticed that mayonnaise was already included with the order. Silly me. From the outside, the burgers still look like real hamburgers, so that promises plenty of good things.

How does it taste?

Unfortunately, the fries have gone cold and most of them were fried a little too long. That does nothing for the flavor. The burger is also on the cool side after the long bike ride. The bun has become a little chewy, and the outside has been baked just a bit too long. On the inside, where the juices from the red sauerkraut and bourbon-flavored barbecue sauce have soaked in, the bun is soggy. With the pulled pork and sauerkraut on the Black Angus, the burger looks more like an open wound than a hamburger once the bun is opened up. The Le Classique holds its shape better, but it too suffers from the temperature and the signs of age in the overbaked bun. Most of the calories remain on the plate, which does provide some consolation.

Should Cannibale Royale join us at the table more often?

Hmm. If the location nearby starts delivering again, we might give it another try, but I’m mainly looking forward to the moment when restaurants reopen and I can eat a juicy piece of steak here late at night. The Le Cannibale Royale Burger Combo costs 19 euros, the Le Classique 15 euros, and both can be ordered through various platforms.
