Delivery review: De Kas’s takeaway meal

De Kas

During this crazy corona period, restaurants are closed, so we’re happily dining out at home. Fortunately, many new and special delivery and takeaway restaurants are joining the scene. And we’re going to test them for you. That way, we can keep eating well and support the hospitality industry. Today: De Kas in Amsterdam.

If any Amsterdam restaurant has achieved international fame, it’s De Kas. It appears in all the foreign guidebooks. No wonder, because it remains a spectacular place. Long before every chef started working with local food and digging around in their own vegetable garden, this restaurant was already serving vegetables and herbs that they grew themselves in the former municipal nursery in Park Frankendael. For almost 20 years, modern dishes with deep flavours have been cooked here. The restaurant itself is also located in a greenhouse. They can no longer use all of the more than 100 varieties of vegetables, herbs and fruit grown under the same glass roof, so the chefs decided to start delivering them.

The delivery

All dishes are intended to be shared, but fortunately you don’t have to do that alone. I choose two dishes: the roasted cauliflower and the beetroot gazpacho. After just under half an hour, they are delivered by the cheerful Nikita. Two containers. At the bottom of the bag, a golden tip is provided: ‘If you want to make it extra festive, transfer the dishes to your own tableware. We’ve packaged the herbs separately, so they stay nice and fresh.’ Unfortunately, the latter wasn’t the case, but holding them under the tap for a moment makes them look fresh again, at least. I’m becoming a real chef now.

Does it taste good?

Yes, delicious! The roasted cauliflower is served with nduja (a spicy salami from Italy), parsley and sourdough crouton. The dish is both crunchy and spicy, making it a particularly delicious experience. The gazpacho made from roasted beets also tastes very special. The deep-red sauce is deliciously rounded. Creamy, floral and fresh thanks to the bergamot, and it tastes superb with the dollop of mozzarella. I regret not ordering all the dishes on the menu.

Should De Kas join us at the table more often?

Yes! The dishes tasted exceptionally good, and let’s work together to make sure those vegetables didn’t live for nothing. Both dishes cost €9.50. If there are two of you, you can order an extensive sharing menu for €64.50, including spring rolls, tapioca and celery, butter chicken with wild garlic, the roasted cauliflower,  coconut bisque, potatoes with aji amarillo and rhubarb clafoutis with vanilla panna cotta. Does that sound good, or does that sound good?! Available to order via Uber Eats, the restaurant’s own website, or for collection yourself.
