Dim sum, but even more delicious than usual

Sea Palace

We’re pretty big fans of dim sum. So when we heard that Sea Palace had added a special dim sum lunch menu with virgin cocktails to the menu, we were there in a flash.

Don’t stop reading at the word ‘virgin’, because these cocktails (also known as mocktails) have long since stopped being the adult equivalent of overly sweet children’s cocktails. In today’s climate, where we’re drinking less and less alcohol, the mocktail trend can’t be stopped. These drinks are no longer the neglected child on the menu, but a serious alternative for a delicious afternoon or evening without alcohol.

A cocktail alongside your dish

Dim sum is traditionally served with tea. But we’re seeing food pairing with cocktails more and more often. Not surprising either; cocktails may lend themselves even better than wine to experimenting with flavors. By mixing different drinks, but also by adding fresh herbs and bitters, for example, you can create a drink that perfectly complements your dish. And that’s exactly what they do at Sea Palace.

You dim sum, you lose some (alcohol)

The iconic Chinese restaurant boat next to Amsterdam Central Station has teamed up with Seedlip. We’re big fans of this alcohol-free spirit. Because it’s packed with botanicals, it’s a genuinely delicious alternative to a regular cocktail. In fact, we’re not exaggerating when we say that in some virgin cocktails with Seedlip, you can barely taste the difference from a cocktail containing alcohol. Dim sum, drinks and getting home without staggering: as far as we’re concerned, the perfect Sunday afternoon activity—which is when you eat dim sum, after all.

What can you expect?

All kinds of dishes pass by on the rolling cart. We had Kai yuk kau (fried dumplings with chicken and shiitake) with our Grove Spritz, and spicier dishes such as Tai chi yauw (spicy baby squid) and Kauw choi kau (pork with Chinese chives) with our Spicy Seedlip. As far as we’re concerned, virgin cocktails are a delicious and perfect alternative to tea with dim sum. Give it a try!
