Dining at a table with 500 guests against hunger

Every day, 820 million people go to bed hungry. In other words: one in nine people. Strangely enough, there are more than twice as many overweight people worldwide. That is why a special dinner is being organised in Amsterdam on World Food Day.

World Food Day, an initiative of the United Nations, is intended to keep awareness of the issue of hunger alive. The ultimate goal? Working towards #zerohunger by 2030. The Netherlands is taking part too. On World Food Day, Tuesday 16 October, a spectacular dinner will take place for five hundred guests at the Scheepvaartmuseum in Amsterdam under the motto At the Table Against Hunger.
Chefs
Renowned chefs have joined this heart-warming initiative. Joris Bijdendijk, Yvette van Boven, Nadia Zerouali, Samuel Levie and Ralph Dahlhaus will present the menu of the future, in collaboration with Ghanaian guest chef Selassie Atadika, who witnessed the impact of the food crisis first-hand while working as a humanitarian aid worker for the UN. Through five small dishes, they will show how our daily food choices contribute to food security for everyone.
Discussion
During the dinner, hosts Eric Corton and Helen Kranstauber (from Food Cabinet) will guide everyone at the table through the issue of hunger: what are the causes, how is it being addressed, but above all: what can you do as a consumer to contribute? According to the organisers, people in the Netherlands can certainly take action too. Conflict, climate change and waste are the main causes of hunger. By eating more consciously, you can do your bit—simply by eating more plant-based and local food and wasting less.
