Do you know these snacks yet?

Eierbal

When you order fries, they don’t always have to come with a croquette or frikandel. The menu at the snack bar around the corner from you features countless snacks that are also worth trying. From lihanbout on a stick to the ultimate combination of frikandel and Mexicano: do you know these six snacks yet?

Lihanboutje

A snack from the 1960s on a stick with a coating of crispy breadcrumbs. What’s special about the lihanboutje is that at first glance it looks like a chicken drumstick and also tastes like chicken, but it is made from a mixture of minced beef and pork. This probably has something to do with the mysterious spice blend kneaded into the minced meat.

Vlampijp

This snack most resembles a reddened frikandel, but in terms of flavour you can easily compare it to a classic vlammetje. The vlampijp also has a crispy spring-roll wrapper, a spicy minced-meat filling and tastes best with a dollop of chilli sauce. You hold it by one of the two ends made of coarse breadcrumbs.

Eierbal

You can order the eierbal (pronounced: aaierbaal) at snack bars in the northern Netherlands. Hidden inside this double-breaded and deep-fried ball of ragout is a hard-boiled egg. You eat it with or without sauce, but always by hand. Don’t call an eierbal a frietei, because that is something else. In that version, the egg on the inside has already been chopped into pieces and is mixed through the ragout. Moreover, this snack does not come from the north, but from the south of the country.

Anonimo

We describe this slightly spicy snack made from minced beef and chicken as a combination of the frikandel and the Mexicano. Handy: the smulrol has a groove that you can fill with your favourite sauce. Unlike what sometimes happens with a frikandel, you therefore don’t have to cut the snack open.

Bonita

If, as a vegetarian, you’ve had enough of that cheese soufflé, try looking for the bonita. This large, elongated snack contains a mixture of creamy potato ragout, sweetcorn, carrot, bell pepper, green bean and chives. It is finished with a layer of breadcrumbs and then, of course, goes into the deep fryer.

Ragoezi

With a little luck, you’ll spot this special snack in the display case of the snack bar around the corner from you. You’ll recognise it immediately: unlike most snacks, the ragoezi is triangular. It is filled with a ragout of ham and chicken.
