Thirsty tales

Do you know when drinking soda is worst for you?

First of all: there is no good time (for your body) to drink soda. Especially when you drink a lot of soda, it increases the risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes, and it is bad for your teeth (yes, also diet soda because of the acids). But did you know that there also seems to be a particular time of day when drinking soda is at its absolute worst?

At least, according to sports dietitian Leslie Bonci, who advises the reigning American Football champions (NFL Super Bowl winners Kansas Chiefs) on nutrition. These are her findings:

All for nothing

The worst time to drink carbonated soda is before exercising, according to Bonci. If you do, you achieve “precisely the opposite of what fluid should do during exercise, namely hydrate. You effectively dry yourself out, because it takes longer for carbonated liquid to pass through the digestive system and efficiently provide those hard-working muscles with hydration,” says the nutritionist.

Rather a fried egg

But if you were not planning to exercise at all, is there another time when opening a Cherry Fernandes is an even worse idea than usual? According to Bonci, there is: in the morning, before breakfast. We do not understand anyway why you would open a can of soda in the morning instead of simply eating delicious fried or perfectly boiled eggs, but apparently it happens. According to Bonci, though, you achieve roughly the same thing as drinking soda before exercising; after a night without food, you are not hydrating your body in the right way, and there is also the danger that the carbonation makes you feel full (without having taken in anything useful), meaning you may even avoid eating for a few more hours. In short, it is bad for you.

So if you do want to drink soda, this sports dietitian advises against doing so at these two times. And try to save that soda for exceptional occasions. Good luck!
