Do you need to buy new pans when switching from gas to induction?

Some people prefer cooking on gas, while others find induction more pleasant. Especially for people switching from gas to induction, it can take some getting used to at first. The advantage is that, unlike gas, an induction hob is much easier to clean. The disadvantage is that switching may mean you need to buy a new set of pans. Or do you?

Because this is a question many people ask: do you need to buy new pans when switching from gas to induction? After all, you’re not the only one wondering whether you can use that one pan on your newly installed induction hob. Still, it is more often the exception that it doesn’t work than that it does.
From gas to induction
Most pans have a magnetic base. Induction heats a pan using magnets in the hob. So if you have a pan with such a base, you’re all set — and that is the case with virtually all stainless steel or cast-iron pans. You can also cook on both gas and induction with most non-stick pans.
Handy symbol
But how can you be 100 percent sure that your pans are also induction-proof? Check whether you can find the spiral symbol on the bottom of the pan (or on the packaging). If so, the pan is suitable for induction. Is there a pan in your cupboard where you can’t see this? Find a small magnet and hold it against the bottom of the pan. If it sticks, the base is magnetic. And magnetic means: suitable!
