Drinking lettuce water is supposed to make you fall asleep within 20 minutes

As a walking zombie, having been an insomniac for years, I grab every sleep tip I come across with both hands. But the big hit on TikTok, which many users swear by, does make me a little uneasy… Lettuce water? Seriously?

Well… Yes, apparently this really does work, and here’s how: you put some lettuce leaves (or simply a whole head of lettuce) in a pan of water, bring it to a boil and then drink the water. Just watch out for any surprise guests such as insects, which can sometimes be smuggled along with a head of lettuce.
Lettuce water: doctors explain how it works
So you’re supposed to drink the water, and then you should feel incredibly sleepy after just twenty minutes. Perfect if you have trouble falling asleep, or if you want to prepare for an amazing power nap. Honestly, it sounds mega weird — but there actually is science behind why this works.
Sleep water?
Lettuce contains lactucarium, a substance that makes you very sleepy. Dr. Winter tells website Health.com: ‘It has a similar effect to opium and has a number of calming properties.’ This is further confirmed by a 2019 study, although a number of doctors also claim that there is still too little evidence to genuinely establish a link between lettuce and sleepiness.
That leaves only one thing to do: test it yourself.
