Eat Amatriciana, help Amatrice

This week (late August 2016), central Italy was shaken by a powerful earthquake. The town of Amatrice in particular has been severely affected. Just as in 2012, following the earthquake in the cheese city of Parma and the surrounding area, (culinary) fundraising campaigns are now getting underway.

Amatrice, Lazio, is the birthplace of one of Italy’s most important and delicious pasta sauces: all’Amatriciana. Romans, who are also crazy about it and consider it a Roman invention, write it as alla matriciana.
Pasta icon
Around the world, the legendary sauce is an icon of Italian food: simple, pure and impossibly delicious.
Amatrice, which was hit by an earthquake, is the birthplace of pasta all’Amatriciana.
The sauce even has protected status nowadays. And its basic ingredients have hardly changed since the dish originated a very long time ago: guanciale (cured pork jowl) di Amatrice, pecorino cheese and tomato. It is said that the tomato was added later.
Eat & donate
Born from an initiative by Italian food bloggers, restaurants throughout Italy are currently serving this pasta to support those affected in Amatrice and the surrounding area. Anyone who orders a plate thereby donates 2 euros to the Red Cross for emergency relief. London has since joined the campaign too, including Jamie’s Italian.
As long as there are no Dutch campaigns yet, a direct donation to the Red Cross is of course always welcome too.
