Family Caron launches Grand Caron at the Westergasterrein in Amsterdam
We’re big fans of the Caron family and their restaurants. Classic French cuisine, in the finest Parisian bistro tradition, right in the heart of Amsterdam. With plenty of hustle and bustle. And an excellent menu featuring nothing but classics such as, say, pâté en croûte, côte de boeuf, boudin noir and poulet rôti. Bon repas, bon prix, as the French call it.
We love going to Café Caron in De Pijp, the Carons’ first establishment. Or to its little sister Petit Caron, the narrow restaurant located just a little further on at Gerard Douplein. There is always love and laughter in the kitchen. And the whole family is involved. With paterfamilias Alain Caron overseeing the kitchen, as well as both sons David and Tom and mother Roeltje working hard every day. Recently, Caron & Zn. expanded their modest restaurant empire with the Gouden Reael, which had to close again after two months due to the restaurant lockdown, but recently reopened its doors.
Westergasterrein
And now there is yet another new addition. A temporary restaurant, aptly named Grand Caron, located at the Westergasterrein. The big brother will temporarily take the place of Petit Caron, which will have to remain closed for a little while longer. Because Petit Caron in the new 1.5-metre hospitality reality? That is simply impossible.

“That place is far too small to receive guests,” Tom Caron explains. “That’s why we’re temporarily moving to Grand Caron. A large space in the Machinegebouw at the Westergasterrein. Normally it is an events venue, but for the time being events are out of the question. We’re going to transform the entire hall in the style of a Parisian bistro. Think folding chairs, French bistro tables, lanterns, wooden wine barrels and atmospheric lighting.”
Opening
The new restaurant will be open from 15 June until at least 1 September. After that, they will assess whether it is possible to continue for longer, partly depending on what happens with the extension of the ban on events.
Reservations can already be made on the Grand Caron website. A nice detail: the restaurant will also have a generous terrace on both sides, with at least thirty seats each.
