At Donnies on Gerard Douplein in Amsterdam’s De Pijp, you can enjoy fancy chicken döner sandwiches. And no, not just at night— you can also devour this popular snack in the afternoon.

Gerard Douplein is slowly transforming from a student stronghold into a culinary hotspot. There’s already Brut de Mer, where you can eat seafood platters, De Wasserette for a good breakfast, great burgers from Thrill Grill, and now fancy döner at Donnies too.

Donnies

Donnies is the brainchild of two brothers from Amsterdam (Martijn and Daan Wolff) with a great love of döner. They love it so much that it pains them a little to see how underrated this snack is. They want to change that, because “döner is fantastic,” says Daan. And at Donnies, you can simply enjoy a craft beer, glass of wine or  cocktail with it.

Fancy sandwiches

The menu features döner with crispy bread, seasoned spit-roasted chicken, and homemade garlic sauce (from € 6.50). But there are also specials with toppings such as Spicy Chili and Smokey Ratatouille. Last but not least: the veggie version with ‘chicken’ from the Vegetarian Butcher. As many ingredients as possible come from local suppliers and farmers.

Here you’ll find the best late-night snacks in Amsterdam

Design meets döner sandwich

Design studio Nicemakers (also known for the Hoxton Hotel, among other things) took care of the interior, drawing inspiration from a Turkish region known for its chalky mountains and blue lakes. The result? Lots of blue, green and pink in the interior. The eye-catcher is the large walnut-wood bar.
