Favorite food cities #1

pintxo's

When we go on vacation, food may well play the biggest role in deciding where we go. Long lists are made in advance, restaurants booked and the best markets sought out. Do you recognize yourself in this? At these three destinations within Europe, you are guaranteed to satisfy your culinary cravings.

Whether you want to eat at as many Michelin-starred restaurants as possible, only vegan food or local cuisine. There is bound to be a food city here for you.

Berlin: vegan

To eat vegan abroad, you have to pay extra attention. But nowhere is it as easy to eat plant-based as in Berlin, where vegan menus are flying at you from all sides.

Brunch

Start the day at Kopps with an extensive brunch. Only on Saturdays and Sundays, but then you can enjoy the extensive buffet from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. for €15 per person, with unlimited servings. They are open for dinner seven days a week, by the way. A little more expensive than the average restaurant in Berlin, but they are also known as one of the best vegan restaurants in the city.

Pizza, döner and dumplings

In the evening, head to Sfizy Veg for fantastic vegan pizza, made by real Italians. At Vöner, you can get a richly topped soy-based döner sandwich, and at Momos, you can fill up on juicy dumplings.

Mexican plus

At Emma Pea, you can enjoy delicious Mexican food, with the occasional detour into a burger or roasted cauliflower with fattoush. Feeling like something sweet after all that savory food? Head to Brammibal’s for donuts with every topping you could wish for. Hello, chocolate peanut butter fudge, espresso and toasted coconut.

San Sebastian: star-studded

Here you will find a very high concentration of Michelin-starred restaurants, of which Mugaritz** and Arzak*** have both been in the top 10 best restaurants in the world for years. If you have enough time, you can eat ten stars in this city. Challenge accepted.

Cheap eats

If your bank account suddenly turns red after a few days, don’t worry—the rest of the food is incredibly cheap. Pintxos are sold all over the city, the answer to tapas in the Spanish Basque Country.

Pintxos

Definitely go on a pintxos crawl and wander through all the bars for the tastiest bites. In any case, stop by Ganbara for the revuelto hongos: mushrooms with raw egg yolk that you can top with foie gras. For seafood, go to Goiz Argi; at Borda Berri, you will eat the most tender veal cheeks of your life, and at Txepetxa, everything revolves around anchovies.

Copenhagen: local food

Cooking with local produce seems to have been invented in Copenhagen. They use everything from the surrounding area and few herbs, so the flavor of the ingredients really comes through. It is not cheap, but if you have the money, it is absolutely worth it.

Relaxed star

Never had the chance to eat at Noma? A number of the former chefs now cook at Manfreds. The focus is on lots of vegetables, sometimes combined with raw meat. Definitely order the beef tartare. Relae is Manfreds’ bigger brother and has a star, but the atmosphere is very relaxed. Do make a reservation in advance.

Comfort food

If you are looking for more comfort food, go to Pluto. Small dishes to share—veal terrine with foie gras and a fried egg, for example—and only natural wines. A visit to the Tovehallerne food halls for pizza (Gorm’s), sweets (Bornholmer Buttiken) or the best sandwich in the city (Ma Poulle) is also an absolute must.
