Festival Beirut & Beyond

Organisers Erwin Schellekens and Jan Drissen are bringing the international festival Beirut & Beyond to Club Smederij in Tilburg’s Spoorzone. During this celebration on Tuesday 31 October and Wednesday 1 November, you can discover Afghan cuisine and the music and culture of Syria and Lebanon.

Family recipes from ShamBosa
The Afghan dishes you can taste at the festival are prepared by Shamila, owner of the Afghan Foodbar ShamBosa in Tilburg. The dishes are based on her own family recipes, made with fresh ingredients, plenty of vegetables and Afghan flavours such as ginger and turmeric.
Shamila fled Afghanistan with her parents and younger sister when she was five years old. After a short stay in an asylum seekers’ centre, she grew up in the Brabant village of Middelbeers among meadows and cows. Despite these Dutch influences and her soft G, she has never forgotten her roots. She takes great pleasure in introducing people to the aromas and flavours of her beloved homeland.
Programme with music and culture
During Beirut & Beyond, there will be performances by the post-rock band Kinematik (Beirut) and The Great Departed from Lebanon and Syria. There will also be debates led by Joost Heijthuijsen, one of the founders of the Tilburg city festival Incubate. Follow the latest news about the line-up and the event on the Facebook page.
