FavorFlav selects remarkable, inspiring and newsworthy stories that you simply must read.
Nutraloaf banned
The state of New York is removing the infamous nutraloaf from the prison menu. The bread is used as punishment for bad behavior. It contains sufficient nutrients, has no flavor and can be eaten without utensils. What’s in it? The recipe differs in every state, but think of it as waste processing. Unpeeled potatoes, applesauce, meat scraps, margarine, syrup—it has all ended up in the nutraloaf at one point or another. Nutraloaf has been a subject of debate in the US for years. According to many, it is a bizarre and cruel way of punishing people.
Sal Meijer is closing
The legendary Sal Meijer, the kosher sandwich shop on Scheldestraat in Amsterdam, is closing its doors on December 31. The salt beef, beef sausage and liver sausage sandwiches are incredibly popular. It is not yet known why Sal Meijer is closing; this will be announced later this week.
Update: Sal Meijer will reopen in spring 2016 with a new partner. The location is not yet known.
Ketchup for your cat
Your pet deserves a little something extra around the holidays too, right? Don’t worry, sauces have now been launched that you can use to dress up your pet’s treats. Under the name Petchup, there is ketchup (beef), muttstard (salmon), bark b.q (pork flavor) and mutt.n.aise (turkey). These sauces are all for dogs, but don’t worry—your favorite cat can enjoy catchup (salmon) and meowstard (turkey). Besides the funny names, the ingredients are perfectly okay too. The makers don’t put anything in the bottles that they themselves wouldn’t eat.
Emu egg
What does an emu egg taste like, from the largest bird after an ostrich? The people at BuzzFeed are curious too, so two editors get to work on the large green egg. The reactions after tasting it are mixed.
