GaultMillau awards ceremony 2018

GaultMillau, Michelin’s biggest competitor, presented its guide for 2018 on Monday, 6 November. An innovative list featuring 35 newcomers.

GaultMillau evaluates restaurants and hotels every year. It does so by awarding chef’s hats on a scale from one to 20. The hats can be seen as points, so if a restaurant has been awarded (almost) 20 hats, you can assume that a top chef is at the helm. In addition to an overall assessment based on this system, GaultMillau presents awards to specific hospitality stars.
The overall top 4
The absolute top consists of four restaurants: De Librije and Restaurant Inter Scaldes have received 19.5 chef’s hats, while De Leest and Tribeca have both earned 19 hats. These are all 35 newcomers in the GaultMillau Guide 2018.
Chef of the Year
The award goes to Jarno Eggen, chef at De Groene Lantaarn. In this old farmhouse in Drenthe, he cooks up a storm.
Talented Chef of the Year
An award for young, talented chefs who are doing an excellent job. Dennis Huwaë, chef at restaurant Daalder in Amsterdam, has every reason to be happy: he was presented with the award.
Sommelier of the Year
Remon van de Kerkhof can wear this title on his jacket next year. This wine expert shakes up the wine lists at restaurant De Treeswijkhoeve in Waalre.
Talented Sommelier of the Year
Ruben Kwakman is the lucky winner of this title. Would you like to see him at work? Then travel to Eindhoven, where you’ll find him at restaurant Zarzo.
Host or Hostess of the Year
Claudia Brevet has been named Hostess of the Year. She is in charge at three-star restaurant Inter Scaldes.
Talented Host or Hostess of the Year
That is Bram van Grinsven. Since spring 2017, he has run his own business: restaurant Somm in Uden. In addition, this 27-year-old hospitality star also has his own wine shop. Besides being an incredible host, the man is also a very good sommelier.
Value-for-money restaurant of the Year
This prize is awarded to the restaurant with the best price-quality ratio. You must be able to eat a three-course menu there for less than 40 euros. Le Hollandais is taking home this award this year. We understand why: it is a lovely place to enjoy good classic French cuisine.
Sustainable Restaurant of the Year
The winner is… restaurant Vuurtoreneiland in Amsterdam. Not only is the restaurant run sustainably, but an evening out here is above all an incredible experience. You sail to an island where, in summer, you eat in a greenhouse and, in winter, in an old bunker.
The new GaultMillau guide will be available for €12.95 from Wednesday, 8 November.
