Genius: Bar owner registers as a church so he can open again

I don’t need to warn you anymore that the measures are com-plete-ly crap. I think everyone agrees that some of them are rather illogical here and there. As of today, we also have to deal with the face-mask requirement in all public spaces. All of them? No, places of worship such as churches, mosques, synagogues and temples are exempt from the face-mask requirement. Sorry, I find that a little illogical, but I already thought that when the hospitality industry closed and Sunday Mass was busier than ever before.

So what do you do? Exactly: think in solutions instead of problems. That’s what they did during Prohibition in America too—for younger readers: from 1920 to 1933, the production and sale of alcohol was prohibited there. What mainly happened was that the illegal alcohol trade flourished and the church saw a huge increase in the number of members. Because the communion wine still had to be consumed, of course… Long story short; the owner of the tequila bar 400 Rabbits in Nottingham, James Aspell, is also a solution-oriented type and has started his own religion.

Say Hallelujah for The Church of 400 Rabbits

His religion is called The Church of 400 Rabbits, and I have no idea what exactly this religion is about, but I already feel like a follower. Or rather, a Bunny Believer—for that’s what you’re called when you’re a member of this church. Sounds hilarious, right? It’s actually quite a serious plan, because Aspell has genuinely already submitted all the paperwork to start his own church. Not because he’s such a religious type, but because then he can open. TEQUILA FOR EVERYONE!

If you’re going to do it, do it properly

So far, it’s been handled quite professionally, The Church of 400 Rabbits even has its own website. That’s why it says: “Join us as we begin our journey to answer absolutely none of life’s big questions. Such questions as why are we here, what’s the meaning of life, why didn’t they just fly the eagles to Mordor and why did Dominos stop making the double decadence pizza base?!”

Those are indeed the more important questions in life, but we’re not going to get answers to them. No, we simply get to drink tequila there. “Our aim is simple, to offer a place of worship to our deity the mezcal bunny. A place where you can drink mezcal without having to order a carvery dinner alongside it, a place where you aren’t kicked out into the cold heartless night at 10pm.

Good example inspires others?

It’s still completely unclear whether this has any chance of succeeding at all (probably not), but I definitely think it’s a great initiative. In fact, let’s start one of these ourselves too. I’m a big fan of the Moscow Mule, so I’ve decided to name my religion after it. My followers will be called the Mules. Every Sunday we’ll get together to water down the wine—in other words, ginger beer with vodka and Angostura bitters. Who wants to join?!
