Genius Ice Creams with Genius Names
At Big Gay Ice Cream, they serve fantastic ice creams with the best names. What started a few years ago as a cheerful food truck has grown into a popular mini-chain of ice cream shops, including a cookbook.
In 2009, Doug Quint and his partner Bryan Petroff started Big Gay Ice Cream. The word gay refers not only to the owners’ sexual orientation, but also to the word happy. They sell ice cream from a food truck in Brooklyn, New York. The truck is a success, and after two years the men decide to open a shop in New York’s East Village. A year later, a shop follows in the West Village, and later they open a location in Philadelphia.

The ice cream they sell is soft serve in all kinds of flavors, and there are great toppings. If you go for the Salty Pimp, you get vanilla ice cream with dulce de leche, sea salt and a chocolate dip. The pimp has become a true classic. The Gobbler is also a treat, with vanilla ice cream, apple butter (a kind of reduced applesauce), bourbon butterscotch, pieces of pie and whipped cream. There is also a version with pumpkin butter and maple syrup. Wow!
Of course, you can also have a ‘regular’ ice cream and choose your own toppings. Think olive oil & sea salt, cayenne, wasabi pea dust and elderflower syrup. There are also cheerful sprinkles, ice cream cookies and all kinds of shakes.
The men have also released a book, which you can buy in the Netherlands too. The foreword was written by our hero Anthony Bourdain, and it teaches you everything about making ice cream. You start out as a newbie with store-bought toppings and end up as a true ice cream master.
