There’s a good chance that you owe your daily caffeine fix to the hard work of a woman. But recognition? Not a chance. City Girl Coffee is changing that and breaking through the glass ceiling by buying coffee beans exclusively from woman-run farms.

Research shows that approximately half of coffee farmers are women. In addition, women are responsible for around 70 percent of the work required to get coffee beans to market. There’s a good chance this comes as something of a surprise, because the same research shows that women receive virtually no recognition for their contribution to your daily cup of joe – no, not even financially. Hello gender gap. Alyza Bohbot of City Girl Coffee is changing that and, as the first roastery in the world, buys coffee beans exclusively from farms run by women.

Not okay

According to Bohbot, male-dominated boardrooms are only part of the problem. An even greater dilemma is the widespread discrimination women face in the world’s best coffee-producing countries. From Brazil to Colombia and from Indonesia to Ethiopia, women work themselves to the bone, yet are seen as ‘the sister or daughter of’ the successful coffee farmer. Where’s the not-okay button? The female friendly coffee is currently available only in the United States, but keep an eye on City Girl Coffee’s Instagram for updates. Because who run the world? That’s right.
