Has the Poké Bowl Had Its Day?

A bowl of rice, raw fish and vegetables. It doesn’t sound particularly exciting, yet suddenly the whole world was obsessed with the poké bowl. Is the hype now coming to an end?

I’ve written before about my annoyance with bowls. I have nothing against the poké bowl per se, but why are all dishes you eat from a bowl suddenly being called a bowl? You don’t call soup a soup bowl, do you? Bloody irritating. The poké bowl can’t really help that, but it did mark the beginning of this trend, which (fortunately) now seems to be coming to an end.

Blown Over

Like all trends, the poké bowl trend started in America before blowing over to the Netherlands. The fish dish has been eaten in Hawaii for years, but when the rest of America picked it up, things moved quickly and the whole world embraced the poké bowl. In the States, it now seems that interest is waning, as many large poké chains are closing their doors for good, reports Eater. Could this also mean the end of the trend in the Netherlands?

Separating the Wheat from the Chaff

Although many American chains have closed, the poké bowl is far from gone. Other chains continue to grow, and perhaps this is simply the moment when the public separates the wheat from the chaff. In principle, you don’t need a bowl on every street corner either, so only those with the best quality will stay afloat.

Avocado

It seems as though the bowl is still hot and happening here, but since we’re always a few years behind America, it could just as easily be that soon you’ll suddenly have to make an effort to order your beloved bowl. So enjoy it a little extra while you can, because before you know it there’ll be yet another avocado restaurant. Or has that trend finally flown the coop too?
