Hats off to the wine PET bottle

We can finally all lounge around in the park, on the beach, at a festival, or sail away for hours on a boat. Of course, we like to have something to drink with that. And you know what? Let’s pour it from plastic for a change.

Nothing is more annoying than having to lug around a heavy bottle. Especially since most picnics don’t stop at just one bottle. So it’s convenient that wine now comes in a PET bottle. Wine packaged like soft drinks, essentially. But yes, such a bottle is lighter, unbreakable and therefore easy to take along.

Outdoor wine

This summer, HEMA poured two Spanish organic wines into plastic. They’re called ‘outdoor wines’. Naturally fitted with a screw cap, so nothing gets in the way of a party outdoors. There’s a white Sauvignon Blanc and a rosé made from the Tempranillo grape. They come in the regular size, but also – for the smaller alcoholic thirst – as a mini with a matching PET glass.

Smooth, fresh and fruity—that’s what they are. The rosé has just a little more bite than the white variety. Of course, these aren’t high-level wines, nor do they possess any profound complexity. But then again, that’s what the price reflects, and they’re perfectly fine for the moments they’re intended for.

100 percent recyclable

Plastic and the environment may sound like a somewhat awkward match. However, these bottles are 100 percent recyclable. And because they weigh at most one-tenth as much as glass bottles, they produce far less CO2 emissions during transport. Viewed that way, they’re actually quite an environmentally responsible alternative.

Just don’t forget to throw the bottles away at a designated collection point. If necessary, take them home with you, if there really is no other option. It’s little effort, because an empty PET bottle weighs absolutely nothing. That way, we can enjoy the sun and contribute to a better environment.
